SARAH THOMPSON | WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS

Sarah Thompson's paintings and mixed media pieces showcase the details of the local landscape. Her most recent work uses bold contrast and a limited color palette, inviting viewers into the eerie stillness of observing moments in nature when certain times of day and the arrival of colder weather and impact the natural world around us.

Sarah Thompson’s art career began at the age of two, while sitting on her grandmother’s kitchen floor with a tray of watercolor paints. In 2004, she graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Sarah’s background in sculpture continues to influence her paintings and mixed-media pieces. She has shown her work at the Fitchburg Art Museum, Worcester Center for Crafts, ArtsWorcester, and in various local galleries, businesses, and events throughout Massachusetts. She lives in Worcester, MA with her husband and children.

Worcester-based artist Sarah Thompson draws her inspiration from the natural world, creating paintings and mixed media pieces that showcase the local landscape. Sarah’s most recent work uses bold contrast and a limited color palette to distill the elements in these picturesque images down to their very basics, inviting viewers to take notice of the shapes and forms in each composition. The muted colors in these pieces communicate the sense of stillness that often accompanies a moment of stopping to observe the landscape and cityscape. This stillness can sometimes carry a surreal, eerie quality, especially when shrouded in a layer of fog or under an overcast sky, at dusk and dawn, or during colder months when the trees stand dormant and bare. As the landscape changes with the shifting seasons, Sarah’s art encourages viewers to take in these changes with a heightened perception, seeing the beauty even in the shadows and the sparseness of the landscape.
