The Distance Between Us
8×10”, paper collage on wood panel with beeswax, $750
Fay Senner is a mixed-media artist and astrologer working from her studio in Hudson, MA. Working across photography, collage, encaustic, and assemblage, she transforms found objects into artworks that explore the layered relationships between nature, memory, and the cosmos. With over 30 years of technical expertise through her printing consultancy, Passion Print, she layers and prints on unconventional surfaces including aluminum and fabric. Her work has been exhibited throughout New England, including at the Danforth and Fitchburg Art Museums. In 2017, she founded Astrology Heart, offering private astrological consultations and art-related workshops — a practice that reflects her belief in life’s deep interconnectedness.
These works begin with the act of tearing — paper, time, memory, the clean edge of what we thought we knew.
Collage has always been a medium of rupture. By layering found imagery, textile, printmaking, and photography, Fay explores what lies beneath the surface of a thing, and what holds it together when the surface gives way. There is grief in these images, but also tenderness. The stitch, the circle, the recurring motif of the lens — these are acts of gathering, of trying to hold
scattered things in relation to one another.
She is drawn to inherited images and half-legible gestures, the texture of other people’s time pressing through into ours. A bird cut from vintage wallpaper. A Polaroid of sisters, digitally altered and printed onto handmade paper. A distant ancestor staring back while another figure dissolves into mist, a torn edge the only border between presence and disappearance.
Each piece asks the same question: what survives the tearing?
These are assemblages of what remains.
