Sasha Knittel’s abstract nature photography captivates because it transforms something familiar into something sublime—like turning a snowfall into an abstract shadowbox or the Mystic River Watershed into a shimmering realm of pattern, motion, and light. Her macro approach and fast shutter work reveal the hidden geometries of nature, offering viewers a new way to see an environment often taken for granted. We are seeing collectors and curators alike taking notice of Sasha’s work, and her recent acquisition with Juniper Rag for Spectrum Health Systems underscores her rising profile and the cultural resonance of her work, marking natural areas in her community that she returns to time after time. Sasha’s art is not only visually interesting, it merges creativity with purpose, embodying environmental advocacy through beauty and innovation—making her a compelling emerging photographer that we should keep our eye on.

Sasha Knittel Bio and Statement

Sasha Knittel grew up in the Hudson Valley NY area. Being in nature as a child, and currently in New England inspires her drive to photograph the natural world. Sasha studied photography at SUNY Ulster and has continued her education through Professional Development courses at Griffin Museum of Photography. She is currently completing a series photographing The Mystic River Watershed titled Dynamic Water. She uses a macro lens, fast shutter speed and flash to create abstract photos of water. In 2025-2026 Sasha is continuing this work and will be exploring ways to show her images in large format prints and interactive video installations. A core value while developing this work is to create it with as little environmental impact as possible.

Artist Statement Sasha is driven to photograph nature and share her photos as a way to inspire conversation about seeing our environment in new ways. She is focused on photographing The Mystic River Watershed which is the most populated watershed in the United States. Creating this work has given her a unique way to express the beauty of water that can be easily overlooked. The strongest component of the current series Dynamic Water is to show that one can choose a topic they care about and make a positive impact socially through creativity. Sasha is involved with Mystic River Watershed Association as part of this project as a volunteer and artist to help keep pollution out of the waterway.
