NANCY WRIGHT, WESTBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS

Nancy finds creative ways for her photography to provide a visual voice that tells a story ignited by emotions and feelings. Her life has been touched by opportunities to turn darkness into light. The “Cobbled Arches” series explores the idea that there are different ways to let light shine through. Even in the darkest of times, when the imagination fuels the darkness and that darkness becomes a blanket of reality, there is light on the other side that twists like a knife and finds a safe place in your soul.

Day fades to darkness, devoid of light and color.

Black crushes soulful play. Or, does it? Things do go bump in the night. A whole world awakens to listen in on the hooting and howling. It’s easy to fixate on the noises. Real or imagined? You never know who or what will pass through the cobbled arches of the mind when light fades. The old Victorian home, worn down in the same way as a used teddy bear. So loved, but sad at times.

Teetering on the fragile line between beauty and unraveling. There was darkness that was imagined. The mind played games when nightfall arrived--

The attic. The cubbyhole. That back stairwell that led to our sleeping chambers.

More options for unwanted visitors. Thud! Thud! Thud! Who was climbing those back stairs? Scratch! Scratch! Scratch! What was that noise in the walls?

My childish mind raced all night. I did not feel safe. I did not feel sane.

There was darkness that was real. Chaos. Quivering. Scarcity.

Directionless swirls and confused snarls. Raised voices. Fractured feelings. The perfect family disintegrated. Shrieks of alcohol echoed through the house. The house that was no longer a home. We clambered through the shadows of darkness, hurling them aside, allowing the cobbled arches of our mind to permit shards of light to pervade.

The variations of light pouring through these cobbled arches reminds me that over time, darkness delivers. Mystical, magical balls of light, some even with color.
