GUEST JUROR GUIDE
1. Exhibition Title Development
A title is developed for the virtual exhibition. The criteria is also developed, either jointly or presented by Juniper Rag. Each exhibition has a unique title that reflects their curatorial vision. (For instance, UNBOUND, about new work that takes risks.)
Instructions:
Develop a short (1 or 2 word) title inspired by:
Based on a theme we present to the juror or a combination
Criteria list that should be followed by the artists
Conceptual or emotional threads to mention
Example Prompts:
Fragmentation & memory
Material storytelling
Digital vs. analog collage
2. Submittable Account Setup & Access
Instructions:
Receive email invitation and follow link to Submittable.com
Click Sign Up (or log in if you already have an account)
Use the email address you provided to Juniper Rag
Once logged in:
Access the assigned submission group for your exhibition title
Let us know immediately if there is a problem.
Review each artist entries (images, statements, materials)
Tips:
View works in full-screen when possible
Take notes directly in Submittable or offline
Revisit works in a few different passes before scoring
3. Reviewing & Selecting Artists
Goal: Select artists whose work forms a cohesive and compelling exhibition. Try to eliminate outliers.
Instructions:
Review all submissions carefully
Consider:
Artistic quality and originality
Relationship to contemporary practices
Conceptual depth
Details, composition, and material use
Select a cohesive group of artists (number determined by Juniper Rag)
Guiding Questions:
What conversations emerge between works?
Does the selection reflect elements of today, the past?
Is there a balance of perspectives and approaches?
4. Selecting the Work
Instructions:
For each chosen artist:
Vote, thumbs up, down —or neutral (to come back to)
All artists should be thumbs up or down at the end
Select 1–3 works to be included
Consider:
Which pieces best represent the artist’s vision
How individual works interact within the exhibition
Visual flow and pacing of the virtual space
5. Top 3 Winning Artists
Instructions:
From your selected group, choose:
1st Place
2nd Place
3rd Place
Criteria:
Exceptional innovation in the subject matter
Strong conceptual clarity
Technical and aesthetic impact
Relevance to the exhibition theme
Deliverables:
Artist names in Submittable
Selected work, mentioned in note(s). If the juror does not select work from each artist, we can include the artist and choose the work ourselves.
Usually 3 pieces are selected.
In calls that have over 100 submissions, we may choose more artists, but 1 pieces per artist, for example.
Short justification (2–4 sentences per winner)
6. Curatorial Statement or Video
Option A: Written Statement (Recommended length: 200–400 words)
and/or
Option B: Video Statement (2–4 minutes), which also gives the juror social media content.
Include for example:
The exhibition concept
How the selected works connect
Your perspective on this work in today’s environment
Insights into your selection process
How your expertise informed your decisions
How original art transforms homes and corporate spaces
Prompts:
What defines [the exhibition subject matter] in this moment?
How do these artists expand or challenge the medium?
What themes or tensions unify the exhibition?
7. Reflection on Expertise (optional)
Instructions:
Briefly describe (100–200 words or included in video):
Your background (artist, curator, scholar, etc.)
Your relationship to collage or contemporary art
How your perspective shaped your curatorial decisions
8. Checklist for Juror at end
Before handing over your results, confirm you have:
Selected artists with thumbs up scoring, no neutrals
Selected works per artist (indicate in note section)
Top 3 winning artists (with a couple sentences about why)
Curatorial statement or optional video
Reflection on your expertise, enjoyment of the process and art
9. Completion Process
Notify Juniper Rag that your Submittable scoring is complete
Ensure all selections are scored before notifying
10. Final Notes
There is no single “correct” exhibition—your perspective is the curatorial voice
Prioritize clarity, intention, and cohesion
Have fun! Take time to sit with the work and trust your instincts!
