Soldier Sailor

48×24.5", collage, $5000

Analytical, emotional, abstract, subjective, objective, geometric, organic, structured, disordered, confident, disjointed, intuitive, calculated, unreasonable, digital, analog, authentic, superficial, anxious.

These are all themes, descriptors, and avenues of exploration seen throughout my portfolio. Drawing inspiration from graphic design, architecture, data visualizations, and maps, I use collage and screenprint to examine and understand these complex emotions and concepts. The things I find visually stimulating often come with an underlying level of calm and structure, providing comfort and rationality. I distort, transform, deconstruct, and recontextualize these forms, a reflection of my mental state as I struggle with ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

As a way to keep myself grounded and present in the moment, found and salvaged materials have become my primary medium. It forces me to actively engage in reality to find what I need to create. Collecting and photographing printed material and design work within the unknown outside world to use and understand later.

Collage has become an almost purely instinctual process within my work. Instead of planning or structuring each piece, it becomes a stream of consciousness guided by the music that inspires me or the endless thoughts running through my head. Once a foundation of intuition has been built, I react with the analytical, rational part of myself. The seemingly random actions are given meaning and logic, pushing the work towards the communicative goals of the piece.
