Christine Olmstead creates abstract work that feels both intuitive and refined. Her colorfield paintings carry a rhythm and calming atmosphere that immediately transform a space, balancing movement, color, and restraint in a way that feels sophisticated. There is a quiet confidence in her mark-making that allows the viewer to experience the work emotionally at first glance, while still discovering new relationships and details as you look more. Her work appeals to collectors who want abstraction that feels alive and harmonious.

Based in Vienna, Virginia, Olmstead brings her own distinctive voice to these contemporary abstractions. Her paintings hold both energy and elegance at once. We believe that Christine’s work has that rare ability to connect with seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike because it creates an immediate visual and emotional response. Owning a Christine Olmstead piece is not simply about art on a wall, it is really about living with art work that continually shifts with light, mood and perspective, offering something new every time you encounter it.

STATEMENT/BIO

I use mixed media to create sweeping abstract paintings that refract light and construct shadows. I am able to manipulate the luster of natural objects and incorporate greater depth and dimension into my pieces. I call my paintings “internal landscapes” that animate internal human experiences.

The stories I tell with my paintings are mine, but sometimes they might feel like they’re yours. Over the past 15 years I’ve explored topics such as grief, loss of loved ones, synesthesia, the intricacies of relationships and currently motherhood. All of my previous collections have created a catalog of language and elements that repeat in my artworks and series again and again in varying iterations. I use thin layers and glazing techniques to imbue a sense of depth, time gone by and movement though the world. My “lifelines” are a recurring element that speak to individual relationships with friends and family members and the tension and tenor each relationship holds on the canvas. Because – at the end of the day – the relationships we have are the most important thing we possess.I use mixed media to create sweeping abstract paintings that refract light and construct shadows.
